What is a Prayer? ( Down load Prathana )

Prayer is a complete submission to God.  It is an effort to enjoin with the Supreme Power who has given us the human life, who looks after us, and who places us in deep sleep in his own lap.  The prayer is that flower which our Lord accepts, and, in return, bestows on us His abundant blessings.  Whenever the man prays he should have the feeling of humility.  In addition to the infusion of pain and anguish in prayers there should be a complete immersion in Him.  You should have a feeling within yourself that your God is not far away from you.  He is somewhere close by.  He knows fully well our pains, anguish, anxiety and worries.

In fact, since the birth of man on this earth, it has been his wish to bow before God and seek His blessings.  Whenever he failed in his ambitions; suffered due to misfortunes; had losses in businesses or work; had the wish to be honored or whenever faced insults or dishonors; had to retreat when he wanted to move ahead; wanted to go up but had slipped down; when he had lost everything in his efforts of obtaining something; had faced loss of confidence from his own people; and when his mind had tormented him, then, in the mind of such a person, the instinct of prayer is born.

Such moments do come to our life some time. Then we go and sit in front of Almighty God and seek His help.   We go to Him when we begin to realise that our own strength and power has begun to weaken and we need to have someone's assistance.   We need such a support which is not far away and which will stay with us.  We look for a friend who continues to bless us, who continues to shower on us his kindness and who does not let his love shrink.  We need such a richness which once achieved does not let us face shortages.  In such a situation we, with our open heart and mind, call the Supreme Power, remember Him and that is the sovereign and supreme power of this world.  That is our God, our Lord. God is the wealth of wealths, strength of all strengths, power of all powers, and knowledge of all knowledges.  Whenever the God has to be called it should be done with full purity and with all the doors of the heart open. This is prayer. Infuse power in your prayers and reinforce your prayers with all your might.

Prayer is a power. It is such an energy through which one finds a way of living a life. Prayer is the final shelter. Prayer does not mean begging or asking for alms. Prayer comes out of the heart with ease.  It is not necessary that the prayer's language should be embedded with high sounding, superlative and figurative words. It is also not necessary that which particular language should be used for prayers, and also it is not necessary that the people offering prayers should be literate.  Only feelings are needed for saying prayers.  Offer prayers with good feelings. Worship the God, and sing the songs of praises to Him.  The God is hungry for feelings, your inner feelings. The prayer should also not be the mugging of words and reciting them without knowing their meanings. Whatever comes out easily, with reverence and respect, is the real prayer.

Ask for His kindness and blessings when you sit in front of Him for offering prayers. Do not present a list of worldly demands to Him. Lord Krishna tells Arjuna: 'Arjuna I have four types of devotees in this world. One, those who call for me when they are in difficulty; second, they workshop me out of curiosity; third are those who offer prayers to me to seek prosperity for themselves; and, the fourth are those who offer prayers to me to gain knowledge, seek purity of mind and to attain salvation.' Do not offer prayers due to greed or under fear. Bow before the Lord only with full devotion and great belief in Him. This is the true salutation. In the scriptures it has been said that identity of a true devotee is that he offers prayers with full devotion and thanks God for His kindness and blessings.

Sing praises of God through the medium of prayers. It results into ignition of love within the heart. One should sing before God with full affection. The praises of God should be sung in such a way that our soul, heart and mind are lost unto His name and we get really attached to Him. Bow before God always and thank Him for all that has been given to you. Get immersed in the prayers to the extent that you enlighten your self-conscious. It has been said: The prayer to God is such that I also become like Him. 'This means that's I should also look like You', Just as the child becomes fearless when he gets into the lap of the mother. This is what happens when saying prayers. Offering prayers means being free from fears, freedom from worries and an anxiety to move towards God.

Prayer is an expression of thanks, gratitude and confidence in God. Ordinarily, prayers are said with some objectives in mind. God is the greatest giver of all givers and He certainly gives, but the person offering prayers should have some patience and have peace of mind until he gets the reward. Do not ever imagine that if you have not been rewarded, your prayers have not been heard. The God has already accepted your prayers but the rewards will come at the proper time. You have planted a tree today, given it water and fertilizer today. It does not mean that it will give you the fruits today itself. There is no way to coax the plant to mature quickly and before its time. God's blessings do come, this is for sure. The God's command is such that the tree will bear fruit at the designated time - not before and not after. In the same way, on the creeper of the prayers the flowers and the fruits will come - but at the proper time.

Pray with true and pure mind -with deep devotion and by forgetting the world around you. God will certainly reward you. It is, however necessary to understand what a prayer is and how to offer prayers.

What Should the Prayer be Like?

Prayer is the medium of expressing our thoughts to the God. Prayer is the food of the soul.  The point of origin of prayer is the mind, and the mind is restless.  Thousands of ideas keep on churning within it.  At one time if an idea emerges the other one comes in its place the next moment.  Man sits to offer prayers with one objective but when he sits in front of God he forgets his original idea.  Some people offer prayers to God with a long list of demands and hope that God will grant them all. Such prayers are neither true, nor pure and nor even emotional. Now the question arises as to what should the prayers be like!

It should not be forgotten that when you have installed God in your mind through prayers, then there will be comforts in life and you will get what you wish for. So offer prayers to the God in the first place: "O God please enter my heart and fill my life with happiness. O God, please protect me always. Please stay in front of me and behind me. I need Your help and guidance everywhere." At the time of going to bed, folding your hands with closed eyes and placing your mind at the feet of God, you should say: "O God, be a flame of my heart, reside happily in my mind. If I tread a wrong path, fall into unwise actions, lose my balance of mind, and if I commit mistakes, O God, please show me the right path, awaken me, and please take care of me again." Whenever you seek something from God, ask for His kindness. Pray with humility and respect. God does not like any pride. "O God, my voice should be Your voice." God listens to the prayers which come straight from the heart.

The Upnishadas have explained what the prayers should be like.  It is said: "O God move me from untrue to the truth and lead us from death, sorrow, pain and anguish towards the nectar of peace and happiness and lead me to kindly light from darkness."

It is also said: 'O God, You are the only spot of security and protection for me, and You are the true refuge. Your lap is the one where we get the true peace. Just as the river continues to flow until it meets with the ocean. The ocean is its refuge. All rivers become silent there and peaceful after merging with the ocean. In the same way, our journey will not be complete and get pacified until we get to Your door. The anxiety that is set in our heart is that we have not been able to reach You so far. O God, we happen to be walking on an infinite path which is filled with distractions. Please let us be at Your feet.'

'O God, we get pacified while we get closer to Your feet. Your shade [cover] is our nectar.   You are the purest of all.  We have opted only for You.  We have selected You only.  Please be a captain of my boat.  O God, please be the guide [driver] of the vehicle of my life.'
'O my God, the fountainhead of all, the God of all Gods, Omnipresent, Supremely omnipotent, all powerful, O God you have been showering Your blessings on us all since time immemorial. You have been fulfilling the demands and wishes of all human beings and living beings at all times. Whatever is good and useful to us You have been, without even our asking, depositing in our hands [knapsack]. Peace and happiness live in Your domain. There is supreme satisfaction under Your feet. Absolute peace and full achievements of all wants.'

'O Lord of the universe, God, let there be full devotion and confidence in us towards You. Let us be capable of sitting in Your lap. Let us be able to clean up our soul of all the vices, selfishness and muster courage to rise above the mean thoughts. Let us remain away from the feelings of desire, anger, greed, attachment and jealousy. To be able to score victory over the demon-like tendencies of our mind, we, O God, call You to hold a corner of Your robs.'

'O supreme pure, God, let there ignite the pure tendencies, forgiveness, simplicity, stability, fearlessness and humility be our possessions. Let our body be healthy and strong. Let the mind be open and steady, let the soul to be pious and beautiful. Let all our energies develop with Your kindly touch. Let our heart be ever filled with kindness and sympathy [fellow-feelings]! Our speech should be sweet and let there be love and affection in our eyes. Let our personality be great and broad and filled with knowledge and wisdom.'

'O God, please shower on us Your blessings. Please bless us so that our life is dedicated in the service of Your holy feet which constantly remain on the move among the poor of the poor. Please oblige us by taking us in Your service.'

'O Supreme Soul, omnipresent God, You have been showering kindness eternally on all living beings. Your light is present in the moon and shines in all the stars. In the flow of the river, there is Your movement. In each and every particle of the earth Your oscillation is present. It is due to You that all Your greatness and rules are present everywhere. All living beings come into this world in a systematic way as per Your command. They return unto Your lap after completing the term which has been assigned by You for them. The process of life comes into motion again.'

'O God we don't know how many times we were born, how many forms we had assumed and how many good and bad acts we had committed. O God, the Lord of the Poor, please be kind enough to tell us how well to perform our actions so that we continue to do good deeds and reach Your feet with the fragrance of those good deeds. We should become worthy of Your kindness. We may get or may not get the love of this world but we must have Your love. This world may get displeased with us but You should not be displeased with us. The millions and billions of people are looking up to You with hope.

You only belong to us all. That is why, OGod, please be kind and bless us. We should never be deprived of Your love. Your benign hand should not be away from us. This is our humble prayer. Please accept our prayers. We are grateful to You for all the eternal blessings given to us. O God, please reside in the temple of our heart. Please be the charioteer of the vehicle of our wisdom and provide guidance to our mind and show it the right direction. Our deed should become pious. Please bless us in this way, this is our prayer. This is what we seek from You. Please accept this submission of ours.'

Only God is the emperor of All Emperors

The initiation of devotion commences when the man bowing his head before the Lord says: 'O God, to love you I love your devotees.  I love your nature and creation.  I love all your living beings. Then only You will love me because only the admirer can get love and affection from Your treasury.  That person does not bear any enmity with anyone'.

Remember this, those who make others fall can never rise. Gardens do not bloom for those who set fire to others; arrogant never get respect; and those who speak bitter do not hear sweet. Those who disrespect others do not get respect for themselves.  This world is such a valley where the same sound gets echoed in the same way.  That is why, speak the language which can appear to be pleasant when it gets echoed back to you.

What use are we making of our education.  In spite of our being educated we continue to hold the feelings of jealousy, hatred and malice, tit-for-tat and what not towards others.  If you have to seek the love of God then establish friendship with Him.  Be worthy of seeking Him.  God is the emperor of all emperors.  To meet Him, try to beautify yourself.  In order to go there all our worldly decorations have to be left behind.  The body is also left behind.  Only your soul gets there.  Try to take the clean soul in His court.  If you will go there make it clean and fresh then surely you will get admitted.  So, don't let your soul be sinful. Try to establish communication with God every day.

He is all supreme and all-powerful.  He does not seek any support from anyone in discharging His duties.  You also try to become self-supporting and we should not depend on others.  God is very kind. If you seek His friendship then do not be unkind to others.  He is judicious. He likes justice. Consequently, we should also become judicious and be prepared to get rid of injustice.

God is pure, wise and faultless and flawless. We should also make ourselves pure and wise.  God is not smeared.  There are many good and bad people in this world but we have to make ourselves pure and remain unattached.  Do not let the soil and dirt of others fall on you. Try hard to bloom like the lotus.  This is the true way of living a life.

God is pure, wise and flawless, unattached, formless and passionless. He has no defects.  If we seek His friendship then we have to remove defects from within us.  In friendship we get mingled with each others.  A poet from Rajasthan has said: when water and milk get together they assume one color.  The milk said to water: look friend, it was good to meet you. The water said to the milk: by mixing with this poor soul you have enhanced my prestige.  I did not have any prestige so far.  My value has gone up because I am now being sold at your price. I feel valued. You are a good friend because due to you my value has gone up.  I feel honored.   The milk said to water: No, my friend until today I could not find anyone with whose association I also become big. After meeting you my volume has increased.  I am feeling proud. I am visible everywhere. You are not seen anywhere. We seem to have become one.

The water said to the milk: This is your greatness that you have praised me. You have honored this poor soul.  This poor fellow now assures you that in the difficult times even my life will be sacrificed on you.

The poet continues to let his imagination fly.  The milk was purchased by the sweets maker.  He put the milk on the furnace to boil it.  The water now realized that his friend was in trouble.  Before the friend could get burnt he kept on boiling and evaporating.  At one stage when the milk realized that his friend has disappeared he tried to look up by rising outside the boiling pot.  The man instantly sprinkled some water on the boiling milk.  Just as the water drops fell on the rising milk it cooled down.  It said to water: O friend, where had you gone.  I was burning and you had disappeared.  I wanted to rise and look around searching for you. Now that you have come I am happy.

This way the Rajasthani poet described how the two friends kept on talking to each other.  The poet tried to explain that two good friends when they get together, get coloured with each other. They share the good feelings and come to the rescue of each other in hard times. In the same way, you should try to get closer to God by soliciting His love, affection, kindness and guidance, because He is the giver and very kind. He has everything in his treasury. He gives everything to everyone and anyone who conforms to His standards and wishes. He is the emperor of all emperors.
